Criticism and Critics of Homeopathy
Homeopathy was born out of criticism of the harsh practices of what was considered modern medicine. Out of this birth of homeopathy also came an antagonism from the dominant approach of medicine, and pharmacology which continues today. Since homeopathy was and still is a revolution in humane, non-toxic, gentle, effective healing, it tends to receive a spectacular amount of criticism from established harsher therapies.
Samuel Hahneman the father of Modern Homeopathy was a harsh critic to modern medicine in his time. Dr. Hahnemann detested the practices of harsh treatments and toxic therapies such as bloodletting, leaching, and the use of powerful drug purgatives and emetics. Dr. Hahnemann felt although these harsh practices could give immediate relief they would cause more damage and become addictive, leading people to an early grave. He realized none of the harsh symptomatic therapies did anything to strengthen the overall health of the individual, but would instead insidiously destroy their vitality and health while giving only temporary relief with use. His criticisms of modern medicine led to a retaliation of great criticism to his newfound science of homeopathy, which has lasted to this day.
When homeopathy became successful, for fear of their loss of business and income, both the established doctors and the apothecaries of the time attacked. Obviously doctors of harsh treatments may feel threatened by homeopathy when there is an effective therapy without the harshness, and toxic destruction of drugs. But, the apothecaries were threatened because they would sell their drugs by weight. Homeopathic remedies have practically no weight to them. The apothecaries refused to make the remedies because they would be sold too cheap. Dr. Hahnemann had to make the remedies himself. The apothecaries panicked and actually had Dr. Hahnemann thrown out of the country where he was practicing. However, royalty intervened. Hahnemanns practice was re-established because of the success of homeopathy where medicine had failed.
Here in the United States, the same pattern of history repeated itself after the turn of last century. During the 1930s when antibiotics came out, and patented drugs became the fad. The AMA was formed for the purpose of getting rid of homeopathy in the United States. Homeopathic remedies cant be patented. So, there is no way to create a monopoly out of their use and therefore, no great monies to be gained. Simple but harsh economics and the hype about antibiotics caused the downfall of homeopathy at the turn of last century here in the United States. But, homeopathy is again growing by leaps and bounds because of its effectiveness and gentleness. Actually homeopathy grows because it addresses what medicine has not. Homeopathy addresses the actual health and vitality of an individual. Homeopathy is healing not medicine.
Today there is a resurgence of homeopathy in the world, including the United States. However with this resurgence, we find extreme attacks on homeopathy, which outright make no sense. Homeopathic remedies are criticized by being so diluted as not to have enough material in them to actually be functional, and yet others outlandishly criticize homeopathy as causing harm. How can they do both? All homeopathic remedies are FDA approved, and are safe. Ive literally had uninformed or biased doctors tell clients how they may get liver damage from the remedies because of toxicity. Well, which is it? If homeopathic remedies are considered placebo by western medical standards then how could they cause toxic damage? Truthfully the worse possible criticism towards the remedies is a person may be getting well, because of an inexpensive placebo reaction. But, who cares, as long as they are getting well? I would much rather have a person no longer need harsh drugs for asthma, diabetes, cancer, hormonal complaints, infertility, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, migraine, depression, etc....etc
.etc
through use of a completely nontoxic placebo if they could be so lucky. But, remedies have worked for millions of people for well over 200 years. Not many patented drugs can claim that, if any. Especially with no toxic side effects. Placebo? No way!
It wasnt until 1813 that a clear public demonstration of the importance of homeopathy could be established. There was an outbreak of Typhoid after the Battle of Leipzig. 180 patients were treated with homeopathy and only 2 died. Those treated with traditional means suffered a mortality rate of 50% (!!!).
However, there is one criticism from western medicine I have found valid. Fair is fair to mention this, especially from my point of view. Western medicine has accused alternative therapies (not specifically homeopathy) of being a stumbling block for people getting proper medical treatment. On one hand it‘s called competition and freedom of choice for some people. On the other hand if western medicine has a therapy which does more good then harm and may save a person’s life or limb then, why not use it too? I think western medicine in some instances has a point. I believe, we should make well-informed decisions and not, “throw out the baby with the bath water.” An alternative practitioner of any discipline, whether homeopathic, or not should allow their client a choice to seek the help of western medicine, and even make that recommendation in certain instances. This is a partially valid criticism.
However, fair is fair again. The unreasonable practice of discrediting alternative choices for healing should be condemned, discontinued, and punished. Discrediting for the sake of creating a monopoly is nothing more then a form of terrorism when it costs us our health, our lives. We are supposed to be on the same side, doing the best we can to help people learn to heal themselves. Western medicine needs to acknowledge alternative choices, and when superior refer people to their use. Pharmaceutical companies need to work hard to make their drugs more organically friendly and safe, and stop their insane attacks on supplements because they work better and safer then their drugs.
In our modern time organizations still feel threatened by the gentleness of homeopathic remedies and their economic benefit. These organizations use fear by giving misleading and false information to prevent and discourage the availability of homeopathy to you. Because homeopathy is not the established medicine, fear tactics in the past have limited the growth of homeopathy in the U.S.. However, because of the success of homeopathic treatments homeopathy keeps growing at a rapid pace year to year. As this resurgence continues more and more people will have access to this gentle healing science which works. You have that choice.
